Photobiology is broadly defined to include all biological phenomena involving non-ionizing radiation (ultraviolet (UV), visible light, infrared (IR), microwave (MW), radio frequency (RF), and extremely low frequency (ELF)). It is recognized that photobiological responses are the result of chemical and/or physical changes induced in biological systems by non-ionizing radiation. Non-ionizing radiation is found in a wide range of occupational settings and can pose a considerable health risk to potentially exposed persons if not properly controlled. The different wavelengths of sunlight exert both beneficial and detrimental effects, not only on individual cells and organisms, but more importantly on the whole ecosystem. A wide range of applications are thus concerned by photobiology. Gigahertz-Optik manufactures detectors and dosimeters for applications from UV-C to NIR spectral range.
