RoHS/ WEEE Current Status of Compliance
This document contains a statement of the strategy and fundamental information of Gigahertz-Optik GmbH activities regarding compliance to the WEE and RoHS guidelines.
The European Parliament and the Council passed the 2002/96/EC Directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE- Directive) and the 2002/95/EC Directive on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS- Directive). These EU- guidelines have been made legal and intend to protect the environment.
Gigahertz-Optik regards this legislation, its implementation as well as compliance as an important component of its corporate activities as a mid-size global manufacturer.
a. WEEE- Directive
As a matter of priority this guideline focuses on the waste and disposal of electrical and electronic equipment and to promote the reuse, recycling and other forms of utilization in order to reduce the amount of disposable materials.
The WEEE- guideline is not a standard guideline for the entire European Union, but defines minimum criteria for the collection of electrical and electronic equipment, which can be modified by every single EU member state.
To meet the individual country liabilities for manufacturers, Gigahertz Optik reviews the respective national directives.

b. RoHS. Directive
Manufacturers of electrical and electronic equipment according to Appendix IA of the 2002/96/EC guideline must ensure that as of 1 July 2006, new production electrical and electronic equipment does not contain lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE). National measures restricting or prohibiting the use of these substances in electrical and electronic equipment which were adopted in the line with the Community legislation before the adoption of this Directive maybe maintained until 1 July 2006. This guideline does not apply to electrical and electronic equipment after category 8 and 9 and those devices which were put on the market before July, the 1st.
To guarantee compliance within the designated legal period of 1 July 2006, Gigahertz Optik oversees its processes and check conformity of its manufactured products to the directive. Products, which fall to the category 8 or 9, will be excluded from this verification.
